The Slaughterhouse Revival: A Long-Term Effort Driven by the Commitment of Our Local Producers

For over a year, the members of the Board of Directors of the AgriSaveur du Pontiac Solidarity Cooperative have been working tirelessly on the revival of the regional slaughterhouse. This ambitious project mobilizes time, expertise, and dedication, often far from the spotlight. Collectively, over 800 hours of volunteer work have already been invested by the producer-members of the cooperative’s Board of Directors. Reviving a slaughterhouse isn’t just about turning the lights back on: it’s about navigating strict regulatory requirements, restoring equipment, planning a viable operational structure, and above all, ensuring that the processing tool meets the needs of local producers. Every meeting, every document, every call is part of essential groundwork, often invisible, but absolutely necessary. The cooperative’s commitment is clear: to build a solid project, rooted in Pontiac, for and with the agricultural community of the entire Outaouais region. The slaughterhouse’s revival is led by the cooperative, in collaboration with several regional and provincial partners, including governmental bodies, agri-food sector specialists, the cooperative sector, and stakeholders committed to rural development. Each contributes in their own way to advance this project in a structured and sustainable manner. With this vision, three producer-members of the cooperative will travel this spring to the international IFFA event in Germany, a benchmark trade fair for meat processing and technological innovations. This trip, entirely self-funded by the participants, aims to draw inspiration from innovative ideas to improve the efficiency, safety, and profitability of the slaughterhouse’s operations. It’s a concrete step that demonstrates the members’ desire to equip the slaughterhouse with the sector’s best practices.65 Route 148 Shawville, QC J0X 2Y0 Shawville, April 16, 2025

The cooperative has made the strategic choice to build a solid and sustainable revival, founded on rigour, economic viability, and regulatory compliance. Rather than rushing things, it prioritizes a stable opening, focused on producers’ needs and designed to last. This long-term effort is motivated by a shared conviction: that of food autonomy and the economic vitality of the region. The cooperative continues to advance, step by step, with transparency and commitment. The cooperative will continue to communicate regularly on the project’s progress, which is moving forward constructively. Efforts continue to ensure a solid and sustainable revival. The path is ambitious, but the motivation is strong, driven by solidarity and a long-term vision. 65 Route 148 Shawville, QC J0X 2Y0 Media contact: AgriSaveur du Pontiac Solidarity Cooperative coopagrisaveurpontiac@gmail.com-
